Dairy Education Requirement for South West Victoria - an Industry Perspective

| Return to Paper Sessions |

Douglas N.A. Maclean

The WestVic Dairy Board sees the development of the dairy industry as inextricably linked with the people making up the industry. the Board has incorporated human resource development as one of the three program areas within its organisational structure. The stated goal of the program is "To encourage and enable individuals to develop skills and knowledge to maximise their full potential within the regionŐs dairy industry through initial and continuing education". To achieve their goal WestVic Dairy has developed a Dairy Education Strategy to the year 2005.

The plan is an industry perspective which considers firstly, the provision of continuing education opportunities for dairy farmers. Secondly, the need to encourage and provide initial education for people choosing the dairy industry, in particular farming as their career option and finally, the requirement to educate the wider community regarding agriculture and dairy specifically.

The issue of the wider community involves enhancing the communities knowledge and perception of the industry. this will improve the interest from younger people considering agriculture, in particular dairying as an attractive career choice. The strategic plan incorporates the primary, TAFE and Higher Education sectors and involves both initial and continuing education.
