Currently the concerns for the future of Tasmania frequently focus on social factors resulting from the commonly accepted poor state of the economy. Young people are are not immune from the general feeling of malaise and in many instances choose to leave to live in mainland states where there is statistically increased availability of employment opportunity. Funding is made available to address the population decline. Frequently highly publicised debates emphasise either economic or environmental factors. However young people surely also need maps of society to fully understand the processes interacting to produce the social systems of which they are a part. This paper will highlight some of the issues and the ways in which educators at all levels can begin to facilitate an understanding of the interacting processes as they exist currently and in other places and times.
