Mary Lyle This is a project funded by Foundation for Australian Agricultural Women through
Federal Government grants. I am an original member of the steering committee
and current treasurer. The steering committee have overseen this project from
its inception last year. The project is spread across 2 shires, Herberton and
Eacham and involved 100 women from 6 towns coming together for 3 days of training
in leadership and group work.
From this training each town decided on a community arts project and the money
was divided by the steering committee into 4 lots of $5,000 for the smaller
town and $10,000 for the 2 larger towns.
The presentation will follow the planning and subsequent completion of one
of the projects. The town this would focus on is Millaa Millaa in the Eacham
Shire. Their project is a heritage fibreglass cow complete with farmer and blue
heeler dog. This was a $5,000 project with the money being used to employ and
artist and pay for materials. Video footage of the launch will form part of
the presentation.
The group of women are now looking at producing postcards of the statue to
sell to tourists as this town is situated on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands
about 1.5 hours from Cairns.
Focus for the presentation will be on the perceived division of this town
and how the project has brought the town together and developed a strong network
across the 2 shires.
